Promises

I've been thinking a lot about "promises" lately... about how important it is to keep a promise made. God is a promise keeping God and He takes His promises seriously — thank God — His promises are yes and amen! The problem is, we live in a culture that doesn't reflect that.
People just don't take their promises as seriously anymore... and it's happening in the church too... amongst leaders. We can see it from the way we treat the task(s) given to us. We take deadlines lightly and bank on Christian compassion and mercy to excuse laziness, indiscipline and worse — insubordination! That's one reason why many Christians can't make it out there in the world — especially so when they work for other Christians!
I've found that if you can't keep a promise, it's better not to make it and if you're too busy to keep your promise, then you're just too busy — period! I also found that if we learn to mind our own business instead of other people's business — and this is especially for those who think or say that they are too busy... then we will have enough time — and focus — in a day to make good on the promise(s) we've made!
There is no clearer or simpler evidence of this as in time management. How many of us today actually keep time well — consistently and constantly. Time management is really not about management but RESPECT! But I guess — bottom line — and this is where it can hurt the most — keeping promises is all about how much we VALUE the person we made that/those promise(s) to. I may not have always got it right but I must continue to aim high and be an example of respect and value especially to those who work with me and those who call me pastor.
Are you a promise keeper? Do you take your promise seriously?? Are you too busy... or just lazy?! How much do you value the one you made a promise to??! May you and I desire to reflect this very nature of God in our own lives more and more each day! He is a covenant — promise keeping God and He is faithful to deliver — always and forever! May we be known as people of our word. Did you promise someone that you'll do something (for them) this day/week/month/year?! Well, what are you waiting for?? The year's about to end! Finish what you started. |
